Zumba: Is It Right For Me? A Local Woman’s Perspective

Zumba: Is It Right For Me? A Local Woman’s Perspective

I can honestly say that I despise gyms. They bore me, and I do not like the monotony of jumping from one piece of gym equipment to the next. It’s exactly the reason I decided to try out a live Zumba class at Pure Talent located at 598 Aultman Street in Ely. Zumba is a unique form of exercise for men and women alike. Zumba utilizes dance in order to encourage fitness. For me, dancing is a fun and exhilarating way to relieve stress and get in a good workout.

I had no idea what to expect when I went to my first class. Up to this juncture in my life, I had only done Zumba from home using DVD’s purchased on Amazon. Once I had completed my first class, I was hooked! In the hour long session, I got a full body workout without all the hassle of any equipment. What I really like is that every single class is different. Melany, our instructor, may come  back after a weekend of learning new routines and give us new material to tackle. Other times she will incorporate older songs from playlists done within the last couple of years. It’s fun because you never really know what you are going to get when you show up. I love it! It definitely keeps things interesting. Selena and Kristy also help to infuse new material into the class.  All of the instructors are full of energy and it pushes me to exert everything I have to keep up.  Zumba leaves me sweaty and tired, but full of life. My Zumba nights are the nights I sleep the best!

One of the best parts of attending a live class is seeing who will show up. Will we have a new face or will it be the usual crowd? I’ve invited several people, and on days that their schedule will permit, they show up with me. It’s always fun to have that friend or family member there dancing along with me, trying to figure out some new routine.

Not only has Zumba helped me to get my exercise on track, it’s also helped me come out of my comfort zone when it comes to meeting new people. Trust me when I say, when you put a group together in a setting like that, you inevitably make new friends fast. I’ve come to adore my Zumba crew. We are always laughing it up, singing to each other, and having fun.  It is a far cry from the monotony of working out by myself at the gym.

So, if you would like to try something new, I invite you to come to Zumba! The best part about it is that it doesn’t matter what shape you are in. You will have fun, build relationships, and that is what is important.

Hope to see you there!
