Early in the evening Wednesday, February 6th, rumors started to spread quickly throughout the community that the newly opened “Shopko Hometown” store would soon be closing it’s doors.
Here’s some info DIRECTLY from Shopko Corporate Headquarters:
“On January 16, 2019, Shopko, a leading operator of general merchandise stores throughout the Central, Western and Pacific Northwest regions of the U.S., announced that it, along with its subsidiaries, has filed voluntary petitions for a court-supervised financial restructuring under Chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Code.
This announcement is an important step towards protecting our future and ensuring our ability to continue delivering the high-quality products and services that our customers are accustomed to receiving.
Today’s announcement provides clarity about the path forward for us, and we are confident the outcome will be a stronger Shopko.
We will be sure to communicate with everyone throughout our reorganization and give regular updates as important decisions and major developments take place. “
In their official press release, Shopko went on to say: In order to position the Company for future success, Shopko has announced that it will be closing an additional 38 stores, relocating over 20 Optical centers to freestanding locations, and conducting an auction process for its pharmacy business. Throughout this process, all Shopko Optical centers and pharmacies remain open and continue to deliver the high-quality products and services to which its customers are accustomed. All other stores remain open as the Company continues to optimize its store footprint. Parties interested in receiving additional information about the Company’s pharmacy auction process should send inquiries to shopko@hl.com.
In a downloadable list, Shopko does include Ely’s location as a store scheduled for closure on May 12th 2019.

Just met with Tom at Shopko. Although the Ely store was one of the leaders in sales ever since it opened in October of 2016, they have been added to the closure list. It appears that May 12th will be the closing date. It is a shame that there will be 15 employees terminated and a strong business leaving our area. Let’s hope that the owners are able to find another busiess to relocate here.
